The biggest issues I had with this costume is not being able to see, mainly because foam needs to be added to the inner of the mask, it kind just smooshed my face. And I'd like to redo the slippers.

Scarlet Witch revamp

This Scarlet was of my own design. I wanted something comfortable. Plus going to SDCC wearing a cape isn't fun. I wish I had done underwear rather than shorts, but it was nice to have pockets.

 Construction:

• Bows were self made with a hot glue gun. For the front and back bow I glued pin backs to them so they are removable. This helps when sitting, if they were sewn on would have smashed the back one with my butt. But more importantly, it makes it so I can still wear the dress as a normal outfit AND be able to throw it in the wash. The orange button was made from a large googly eye and painted over in orange, then hot glued on carefully. 
• Necklace was made from a piece of white ribbon. Used yellow fabric paint for the moon. Tided in a bow in the back under the hair. 
• Wig was self styled. Victory rolls, hair spray, bobby pins. 

Pinup Sailor V was a very easy, cheap, and comfortable cosplay. I wore it to Moon Crisis: A Sailor Moon Tribute Art Show and won judges choice in the cosplay contest.

Harry Potter Wands!

     So, I saw this epic tutorial HERE and gave it a shot. I made these wands for a Harry Potter gift exchange on reddit :] Supplies: Glue gun, chop sticks (longer the better), beads, brown acrylic paint (more than one shade), and a acrylic pain top coat.
     Top wand's end has a cool texture to it. I used beads in the glue and popped them out after the glue cooled. the beads left little round crevasses that gave a neat texture. The bottom wand has beads still in it. Giving it the bubbly look. Everything else is just hot glue. :]

The only thing I really hand made was the butt bustle. I took a scrap of green fabric from a bargain bin and sewed ivy leaves on the edge then sewed it to the one piece. The makeup I used face paint for both my brows and the green swirls. Also pinned a few of the leafs in my hair. I had the option of green leggings but they didn't match my boots. I'd really like to do a more cartoon version of her with the green leggings once I get the correct color boots :]

FX Mermaid Ears- $13 from a con booth

I started off with a white swim suit. Taking a box of blue Rit Dye, I dyed the suit and a yard of silverish tool fabric. The easiest way I've found to dye things is in my washing machine. Poor in the dye powder, fill the machine, then put on some gloves to dip your item in. Make sure its completely soaked. Then run a long cycle in the machine. After the cycle is done put in some soap and run it again to get out the excess dye from the item. Dry the item whatever way you see best, I usually hang it to dry. Then run one more cycle in your machine with just water and bleach to clean it out, you don't want to accidentally dye your next load of clothes! For the fabric I put it in a mesh wash bag to keep it from shredding or getting caught in the washer.

For the star fish, I used a metallic spray paint in two tones of color. On some of them to be a brighter shade I used a base of acrylic paint and a light spray of metallic on top. Then once it was dry I glued pearls and gems onto them. You want to use half pearls that have a flat back, round ones don't stay on very well. I recommend E6000, its an industrial strength adhesive, rather than hot glue. After the E6000 dried I hot glued a small bit of felt on the back then a hair clip. For the chest piece I glued three strands of pearls, all different length so they would taper. Instead of hair clips I used brooch pins.

The bustle was hand sewn, gathered at the length I wanted and threaded a few times with needle and string, then stitched onto the back of the suit. Its a good idea not to have it too long, if it drags there is a good chance that you or someone else will step on it and rip it off your suit.

The ears were made by a friend who runs a small FX shop, they were glued on with spirit gum and blended with makeup. I used face paint to shade the insides green/blue. I placed green and blue hair extensions on both sides of my head and then teased the ever living crap out of my hair. As a warning this much teasing can be hard to get out, I usually condition my hair in the shower while combing through it then washing it with shampoo. If you buy hair extensions you want to make sure they are 100% human hair or they wont dye. My face I painted with TAG face paint, I already owned a pallet. Michael's sells a small Snazaroo pallet for pretty cheap. Its not the best brand there is, but unless you plan on face painting for a living it doesn't matter that much.

Over all a very fun and simple costume :]

I've always loved the things they had to offer at SDCC but never bought anything. I do not regret it. They make very very good products. Their corsets are wonderful and steel boned, very comfortable.

How to make pasties

Eliza the mermaid!

This is probably the most decorated mermaid themed bra I've ever made. Not really my style, but I had fun making it :D Kudos to those that make these kinds of things all the time.

Tools needed:
Plastic shells
spray paint
pearls
hot glue E6000
tan bra
shells

* hot glue actually causes the spray paint lacquer to remove itself from the shells, use E6000 instead.

Potions Lesson

Harry Potter Party:
Potion Making

For my birthday I've decided that I'm having a Harry Potter themed party. I've make a very long list of things I'm making for said party. This was one of them.

What you need:
-jars/bottles
-food coloring
-soaps/oils/etc
-labels

potions are really fun and you can get crazy creative with them. If you are going to make a useable substance in them, make sure the liquid can easily come out of the bottle, the green bottle for example is too thin in the neck for the substance to come out of. You can find bottles and jars at local craft stores, Etsy, and I've found some good ones at thrift stores.

Horklump Juice:
I started out with the odd shaped bottle. I picked a potion that I liked and though how I could make it. If you need help picking a potion there are several sites that have potion lists, such as Harry Potter Wikia. You can get really creative on what to put in these bottles unless you want it to be something useable or eatable. The odd shape bottle I used a straw to fill it with green aloe vara, usually used for sun burns. The little bits of air that stick in it give a pretty cool effect. because the bottles neck is so small and aloe is so thick, it was pretty hard to get it in there, keep that in mind. After filling it I used brown paper to make a tag. The tag I drew out and tied to the bottle. You have the option of gluing the tag on as well, but because it was an odd shape it was more fitting to have a tie on tag. There are also pre made bottle labels you can order from various sites.

Love Potion:
The large pink bottle was the easiest to fill and is a useable item. Its filled with bath salts and body wash. The bath salts gave it a thicker, crystal like appearance and the micro beads in the body wash add a sense of substance. The color turned out amazing by the way.

Vampire's Blood:
Not a hard one, just water and red food coloring

Felix Felicis:
Small bottle, as its considered a bit rare and a little bit goes a long way. For this one I used gold nail polish. [The movie accurate bottles are harder to fine, but there are some sellers on Etsy who have them.]

Unnamed Bottle:
The cube bottle has yet to be named. at the bottom I placed bath salts, dripped blue food coloring on them, and let them absorb. After that I squirted the green aloe vara on top of it. The aloe became more liquid but didn't mix with the blue, rather it rests on top of it; give the potion a two toned appearance.

Construction of Scarlet Witch

For LBCC, I dressed as Scarlet Witch from xmen. While I love to hand make all my costumes, sometimes its just easier to piece things together. Which can save time and also can be cheaper in some cases.

I first had to pick what version of Scarlet Witch I was doing. After refreshing my memory on her back story, alternate universes and what not, I went with a very traditional version of her.
Then I thought about what would be the easiest construction of this costume? and made a list of items I would need.

Wig

• Luckly for me my friend Panda had already done a Scarlet Witch costume and had previously gave me a few of her wigs. so the wig was out of the way and shaved off a good $30-$60 of the production cost.
• For wigs, I usually check cosplay sites and then if I can't find what I'm looking for I'll look at more expensive wig sites.

Cape

• Having a ton of extra fabric around the house, I did a very simple (and I admit, not very well constructed) cape out of a back drop fabric I had. By the time I reached the cape in the costume process I was a few days away from Con and had to think fast. I took the fabric and measured the length from my shoulders to the floor then cut the fabric accordingly. I hemmed all the edges and pinned it to my top. It didn't look bad, but it didn't look amazing either. *Shrug*

Head Piece

• The head piece was tricky. I wanted to find something that was already in the general head form. I went to a craft store and looked around. They had some plastic masks for masqurade parties that you could decorate yourself. I snagged a large one of those and drew out the head piece on the top of it. Then cut it with a electric saw. Note: Wear glasses or even a mask if you try this, piece of hot plastic hurt. After cutting it I took a file to the edges to smooth it out. Then took a faux vinyl fabric and covered the head piece with it. I lined the back with black felt so it wouldn't stick to or hurt my face. Under the felt I added an elastic string so it would be wearable.

Corset or suit

• I looked at my options. I could do a red swim suit or a corset and underwear. I went with the corset. I order it from The Fashion Corset Shop since making a corset is an extremely hard thing to do and I applaud anyone who can. Some of their corsets aren't made for large breasts, so I used some double sided tape to keep those babies in there. I admit, they were really popping out. My bad.
• The red underwear I bought at a lingerie store, I just brought the corset with me to make sure they matched.

Makeup

• I chose a very red lipstick and a some what dramatic eye. I used red eye shadow that I bought at Hot Topic years a go, they may or may not still carry it. And heavy black liquid eyeliner.

Gloves

• Bought at Party City for my Molotov Cocktease costume from SDCC. Shaving off another $10 off the production cost.
• Can be found online, usually sold by Leg Avenue

Nylons

• as a large hipped lady, I often have a hard time finding colored nylons in my size. But, I did some hunting and I found We Love Colors which offers great nylons in all sorts of colors and in plus sizes. They were very comfortable.

Boots

• for my boots I wanted something flat. walking around con all day in heels can be horrible. So I hunted down some cute red scrunch boots from Ami Club. If you want some ridiculous boots, boy they got them.

Molotov Cocktease from Venture Brothers

One of my more cheaper costumes, but still pretty fun. The unitard was a plus sized item due to my height. Was taken in by a friend. Front and back were hand cut and sewn. The back piece had skin colored nylon sewn to it to keep it on yet flesh toned. Double sided tape lined my chest and stomach to keep the unitard in place. I plan on doing this costume again but will get a new unitard for it. I plan to not cut the back this time and sew in a bra to the front connecting it with clear elastic. I tried to do it as accurately as possible but unfortunately the costume is worn by a cartoon and is realistically very hard to wear. I made felt pasties to wear under in case the top came off, when outside the tape would come off due to sweat. Also not wearing a bra all day was pretty uncomfortable. The belt was made from strapping from a fabric store, next time I'd like to get something leather custom made. Over all a fun character.
